I watched David Attenborough’s ‘Africa’ this week and it left me wondering. What will happen when there’s nothing left? Driven to extinction through poaching, logging, over-fishing and human activity how long have a lot of animals got left before they can no longer survive? We are their biggest threat and don’t seem to grasp the gravity of the situation, the natural world is struggling and our legacy may be their destruction.

They watch from bars

with hungry eyes

dreams filled

with urges denied.

Lands once full

lie dry with bones

amongst burnt stumps

no tusks and hides.

Teeming seas

now barely ripple

their giants gone

to soups and balms.

Our chance is gone

a world destroyed

wild made tame,

it is Africa no more.
